You’ve launched a platform. You’ve planned events. You’ve sent the newsletters. You’ve tried Slack. Maybe even a LinkedIn group. But your members still aren’t engaging the way you hoped.
It’s easy to assume the problem lies with them - that they’re busy, disinterested, or hard to reach. But what if the issue isn’t your members? What if it’s the experience you’re giving them? Here’s the hard truth: Most member disengagement isn’t a people problem. It’s an environment problem.
Even your most passionate members won’t engage if the path is full of friction.
If they don’t know where to go to ask questions, if notifications aren’t reliable or if the platform doesn’t work well on mobile then even the best content, conversations, and events will struggle to land. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your strategy is wrong, but it might mean that your platform is getting in the way.
If we’re honest, a lot of platforms used by membership organisations are either just generic chat apps or tools made for workplaces: Slack, WhatsApp, Facebook groups … you get the idea.
They weren’t designed for modern membership communities, and your members can tell. If your platform feels like an afterthought, your members will treat it like one. The result? Silence. Drop-off. Missed renewals.
People don’t engage in spaces that feel confusing, empty, irrelevant – or worse – too time consuming. They’re much more likely to engage where they feel welcome, have clear directions and know that their time will be well spent. It’s not enough to just have a space.
You need to design it around the member experience.
If your members aren’t showing up, pause before assuming they’re just vaguely disengaged.Instead, ask yourself:
1. Is the platform easy to use, even on mobile?
2. Are members prompted to return (notifications, reminders)?
3. Is the value of engaging obvious from the first visit?
4. Do members feel seen, heard, and recognised?
5. Does it feel alive - or like a digital ghost town?
Chances are, if any of these are missing, that’s your engagement barrier.
Successful membership organisations don’t leave engagement to chance, or to clunky software. They make it easy and meaningful to show up, every day. That means:
• Creating clear, topic-based spaces that spark discussion.
• Building in ways to highlight members and their stories.
• Providing regular prompts and digestible updates.
• Having ways for admins to track engagement, activity and what’s working.
• Cultivating a clean, branded space that feels like the place to be.
This is where your platform choice really matters.
If engagement is low, don’t just tweak your strategy, audit your setup. Because your members aren’t lazy. They’re busy. They’re overwhelmed. And they’re looking for value that’s worth their time. Give them a space that delivers that value – simply and consistently – and they will use it.
